Anne Eliza Hoge

Anne Eliza Hoge Snidow, also recorded as Ann Elizabeth, Annie, and Nannie, was more than simply John Chapman Snidow’s wife. Although the surviving records are mostly genealogical, they allow a useful outline of her life.

The records suggest that Anne’s most consequential role came after her husband’s early death at 36 years old: she preserved and raised a young family of four whose children later entered Virginia political, agricultural, religious, and civic life. What remains unclear is how she managed the Snidow property and estate between 1876 and her own early death in 1888 at 46 years old.

Her children’s later significance

Anne’s daughters connected the Snidow family to other prominent Virginia families:

Annie Johnston Snidow married John William Williams, who served for more than three decades as clerk of the Virginia House of Delegates. The official Virginia legislative biography identifies her as the daughter of Major John Chapman and Ann Elizabeth Hoge Snidow.

Florence Eliza Snidow married her cousin John Thompson Sayers Hoge and lived at Wheatland, the important Hoge family home near Pembroke. Through Florence, Anne’s descendants remained closely tied to the Hoge family and Giles County for several generations.
