Dr. John Henderson Hoge

Born in Montgomery County, VA, in 1851 to James Fulton and Eliza Jane Hoge. John became a prominent physician in Giles County, VA. He was chairman of the Board of Health. Married Eloise “Lulu” H. Croft in 1877, daughter of David Croft and Elizabeth Araminta Hardwick.

When his sister-in-law, Mrs. Beverly Lacy Hoge, became sick with Diphtheria in the city of Roanoke, Dr. Hoge was telegrammed to come to her side. He successfully treated her, avoiding possible death from the disease. The spread in the city was most likely due to other physicians not reporting cases, which caused the widespread spread and deaths.

In the 1900s, when a case of smallpox broke out near Mountain Lake in Giles County, Dr. Hoge rushed in, took the necessary quarantine measures, and treated the patient, preventing further spread of the disease.

He died in 1920 at the age of 64 years old at his home in Hoge’s Store, VA.
