James Hawes Hoge

James Hawes Hoge was born on February 5, 1854, in Blacksburg, Virginia, the son of Daniel Howe Hoge and Ann Hawes DeJarnette and a grandson of General James Hoge. He entered the Virginia Military Institute in September 1870 as a member of the Class of 1874 but was removed from the rolls the following year after failing to return from a medical furlough. Hoge later worked as a clerk for the Virginia registrar and settled in Princeton, West Virginia, where he served on the board of deacons of the Presbyterian Church. He married Maggie Reese and had a son, Daniel Hawes Hoge. Following her death, he married Georgia Karnes in 1906 and raised a second family. James Hawes Hoge died on November 27, 1930.
