Senah Anne Hoge

Senah Hoge Reynolds grew up at Wheatland in Giles County, Virginia, the daughter of Captain Joseph Haven Hoge. Born around 1849, she was the fourth of twelve children, although only five survived to adulthood. Her family lived in a two-story brick Greek Revival home surrounded by extensive wheat and cornfields, and her father operated a general store on the property. Senah first came to Abram Reynolds’s attention in 1866, when he visited the store as a young tobacco salesman. After a six-year courtship, they married in October 1872 and settled in Bristol, where they raised seven sons and one daughter. Senah managed a large household, remained committed to her Presbyterian heritage, and played an important role in Abram’s religious conversion by encouraging him to attend a revival. After Abram died in September 1925, Senah became exhausted while receiving family and attending to funeral traditions. She died only two weeks later, describing Abram as “the rock of my life.”
