Discovering Your Purpose: A Step-by-Step Guide to Becoming the Person You Aspire to Be
Introduction
A personal purpose statement is a powerful mission statement that aligns your actions with your fundamental values and aspirations. Crafting this statement involves understanding what truly matters to you and articulating it in a way that inspires and directs your choices with clarity and intention.
For the past decade, we have journeyed alongside families, exploring their values and aspirations. But everything transformed when we introduced the powerful concept of crafting a purpose statement. Goals evolved into grand visions, bold and inspiring. They became avenues for meaningful impact, fueled by a newfound clarity in their direction, life’s mission, and legacy. Let’s dive into how you, too, can formulate your North Star.
The Importance of a Written Purpose Statement
Imagine a world where only 9% of people possess a written purpose statement. Unfortunately, this is real. Are you among the few who have tapped into this powerful tool? Writing down your purpose isn't just an exercise; it's a transformative journey that provides direction, ignites motivation, and offers an unmatched sense of fulfillment. Consider the remarkable lives of influential figures like Oprah Winfrey, Elon Musk, and Steve Jobs. They all harness the power of personal purpose statements, using them as a guiding compass for their decisions and aligning their actions with their ultimate dreams. Don't you want to join their ranks and experience the clarity and drive that comes from articulating your life's purpose? Start crafting your purpose statement today and unlock the extraordinary potential that lies within you!
The Intent Behind a Purpose Statement
Your purpose statement serves as your guiding light—an unwavering North Star that illuminates your path and clearly directs your decision-making process. It offers a sense of consistency and meaning, helping you navigate life’s challenges with confidence and purpose.
Where Do I Begin?
Crafting your purpose statement is a deeply personal and evolving journey. This process is not linear; instead, it consists of multiple layers of self-discovery. It may take hours, weeks, or even months as you thoughtfully explore your motivations and aspirations. Below are key areas to reflect upon as you embark on this journey. Touch on one or all, depending on what resonates with you.
Defining Your Future Self
Question: Who do I want to become?
• Reflect on moments when you felt most alive and capable.
• Envision the aspirations that ignite your passions.
• Identify the qualities and achievements you seek to attain.
The simplest way to begin is to start writing. There are no preconceived ideas or requirements for grammatical correctness. Establishing a journaling habit can be enlightening, but writing something down for 30 minutes will help you get started.
Core Values and Beliefs
Questions to consider:
• What values are most important to me?
• What principles should guide my decisions and actions?
• How do I want to contribute to the world?
Exercise: Core Values Identification – Write down your top five core values and rank them in order of significance.
You can identify which values resonate with you using our Core Values Exercise. Continue to narrow them down, noting similar words, and select the one that best describes your core values. For example, education vs. knowledge. Our family chose knowledge because it is broader than the limited connotations of a formal degree. No right or wrong answer is simply about what you feel best represents your values.
Personal Growth and Character
Questions to consider:
• What traits do I admire in others and wish to embody?
• What weaknesses or habits do I want to improve?
• What kind of mindset do I want to cultivate (e.g., growth mindset, resilience, empathy)?
Exercise: Find Your Hero – Identify a person you admire and list the qualities they possess that you want to develop.
Identifying someone to look up to can be beneficial. This person could be a famous historical figure or a parent or sibling. Pay attention to the traits you aspire to embody. Research their life story. While some say you should never meet your heroes or uncover their dark secrets, remember that everyone is human, and the painful lessons in life may have shaped the qualities you admire.
Relationships and Social Impact
Questions to consider:
• How do I want to be perceived by others?
• What kind of relationships do I want to nurture?
• How can I positively impact my community?
Exercise: Write a Legacy Letter – Write a letter describing the impact you wish to have on others.
This exercise aims to inspire you to write beautiful letters that brighten your loved ones' days. Consider the relationships you wish to nurture and let your words reflect that. Letters can be addressed to anyone who has touched your life—be it an old friend, grandchildren, siblings, caregivers, stepchildren, or anyone special to you. Each letter is an opportunity to express gratitude, love, and intentions. If you feel you aren't quite there yet in a relationship, think about how to improve it, which is the goal of the task.
Career and Passions
Questions to consider:
• What kind of work aligns with my passions and skills?
• What legacy do I want to leave in my professional life?
• What motivates me every day?
Exercise: Imagine Yourself in 10 Years – Write a vision of your ideal career and accomplishments a decade from now.
Asking yourself how old you will be in 10 years is incredibly powerful. Time passes quickly, and if you're not intentional, you might miss out on your big dreams. Create a vivid picture filled with color of what you would be doing, even if it is entirely different from what you do today.
Lifestyle and Well-being
Questions to consider:
• How do I want to take care of my health (physical, mental, and emotional)?
• What does an ideal day in my future life look like?
• How do I balance work, relationships, and personal time?
Exercise: Create a Vision Board – Gather images that represent your dream lifestyle.
This was the very first exercise we did as a family. Looking back and seeing what was put on the vision boards is fascinating. In my case, I had a picture of Belle Hampton Farm. At that time, we weren’t even considering a move to Virginia. We were looking at Montana, but reflecting on my passions from 10 years ago, my Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) emerged. Try out this exercise and be prepared to be amazed.
Vision and Long-Term Goals
Questions to consider:
• What is my ideal life in 3, 5, or 10 years?
• What achievements would make me feel fulfilled and proud?
• What kind of memories and experiences do I want to create?
Exercise: Big Three Goals – Define three major life goals that align with your purpose.
What significant goals would be life-changing in the future? We suggest starting with a list of significant goals you have achieved in the past (e.g., getting married, having kids, changing jobs). Were these goals planned, or did they happen by chance? Consider three that you want to achieve in the next 3, 5, or 10 years. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know how to get there yet. That will be covered in goal setting and achievement.
Overcoming Challenges
Questions to consider:
• How do I handle failure, criticism, or setbacks?
• What skills or strategies can I develop to navigate life’s uncertainties?
• How can I turn challenges into opportunities for growth?
Exercise: Journal a Painful Memory – Reflect on a past setback and outline the lessons learned.
This exercise leaves me with mixed feelings. Although much good can come from journaling a painful memory, I sometimes recommend writing about what you are grateful for. When my mother passed, my psychologist recommended writing about the pain to overcome my anxiety. However, my mom’s good friend said, “Honey, you were so blessed to have her in your life. Write down your blessings.” I lean toward the second recommendation but consider both on your journey.
Legacy and Reflection
Questions to consider:
• What do I want people to say about me at the end of my life?
• How do I want to remember myself in moments of reflection?
• What mark do I want to leave in the world?
Exercise: Write Your Eulogy – Imagine what you’d want people to say at your funeral and write it down.
The first time I sat down to write my eulogy was in high school for a class assignment. Although I don’t remember what I wrote (I wish I had a copy), it was a powerful exercise. The movie The Last Letter is an excellent example of how impactful it can be in developing your purpose.
The film follows a formerly successful businesswoman who collaborates with a young local writer to craft her life story. When the initial result falls short of her high expectations, she embarks on a journey to redefine how she will be remembered. This illustrates the potential impact of this exercise on you.
Crafting Your Purpose Statement
Once you’ve completed some or all of the exercises, you can synthesize the key themes, values, and aspirations into a concise Purpose Statement.
Exercise: Use AI Tools – Consider refining your statement using AI to ensure clarity and inspiration.
All of the exercises are detailed at Bellehampton.com/resources. Now, it's time to put everything together. What stands out to you? Are there any themes? Using AI tools to identify recurring thoughts is a great way to start. Consider asking: What are the three to five themes of the results from your exercises? Alternatively, if you are more advanced in the statement, enter the information and ask it to draft a purpose statement. Be ready to modify it.
Refining and Perfecting Your Purpose Statement
• Does it resonate with you?
• Seek feedback from a trusted friend or mentor.
• Edit and revise until every word serves a clear purpose.
• Take breaks and return to it with fresh eyes before making final adjustments.
The key is whether it resonates with you. It helps to ask others what they think, but in reality, it comes down to what you believe. Make sure you take breaks for an hour, a week, or even longer. Take a walk and reflect on the meaning. In my case, I run to clear my mind. I edit and then let it sink in. But keep crafting it until you reach a place you are excited about.
Writing Your Epitaph
• How did I impact the lives of others?
• What values and principles defined my journey?
• What do I want to be remembered for above all else?
Exercise: Write Your Epitaph
I know it sounds morbid, but it is a valuable exercise to summarize your purpose statement. Think of it as your elevator speech or motto. This is just an easy sentence or two you can share with a friend or colleague. Now, don’t go around boasting about your purpose randomly, but you want similar aspirations in a relationship, especially with a life partner. Choose to share it wisely.
Conclusion
Defining your purpose is a transformative process that requires self-reflection, commitment, and patience. By carefully exploring your values, passions, and aspirations, you can create a purpose statement that serves as a foundation for meaningful and fulfilling life choices. Take the first step today and begin crafting a life of clarity and intention.
