Big Goal Setting: Engaging Activities to Help You Dream and Achieve

For a decade, our family has woven goal-setting into our family meetings. We always started with the question, “How old will you be in ten years?” This simple inquiry sparked a cascade of dreams and aspirations, urging each one of us to envision our best selves a decade ahead. As those ten years have passed, I am eager to reflect on our journey.

In 2014, we had just completed the extensive renovations of our house in Mason. Little did we know that the following year would bring profound challenges, beginning with the sudden loss of my mom and Tom’s dad. The year continued to test us as we mourned the passing of my godfather and uncle. Despite these sorrows, we also celebrated significant milestones, such as two of our boys graduating from college and embarking on promising careers.

The dream of owning land rich with water and nature transformed into the reality of restoring Belle Hampton, a place steeped in history. Our move to Southwest Virginia to embrace the tranquility of farm life was a profound shift. This new chapter led me to a fulfilling path as an author, consultant, and family historian. While the picture we painted ten years ago was not exact, we filled in the colors along the way, creating a masterpiece that truly reflects our journey.

So, how do we set ourselves up to create those monumental Big Goals, the masterpieces that will define our next decade? Goal setting transcends merely writing down dreams; it’s about crafting a strategic roadmap to transform those dreams into tangible realities. Setting big goals can be exhilarating, inspiring, and life-changing, whether aiming for personal milestones, professional achievements, or family growth. To kickstart your journey, we’ve curated dynamic activities that make goal-setting effective and enjoyable. Let’s embark on this transformative adventure together!

1. Vision Boarding

Visualize Your Future

Create a vibrant collage of images, quotes, and keywords that vividly represent your dreams and goals. Vision boards are powerful daily reminders that keep your aspirations focused and provide constant motivation. In our family, vision boards were an early tool we embraced to crystallize our goals. Reflecting on my board, I realize that Belle Hampton was a vision I had long before it became a reality. Even without a concrete plan, simply having it in my field of vision helped manifest that dream.

What You Need: Magazines, scissors, glue, poster board, or digital tools like Canva.

2. The "Big 3" Exercise

Focus on Core Aspirations

Identify three big goals you’d love to achieve in the next 5-10 years. Think about why these goals matter to you and brainstorm steps to make them happen. We tried this exercise at our last family meeting, preparing in advance. Some of us used AI to spark ideas. I put my purpose statement into ChatGPT and asked it to suggest major goals based on it. The clarity it provided was amazing. While the AI suggested more than three goals, I picked and refined my top ones to focus on.

Prompt: “If I could achieve only three things in the next decade, what would they be?” Use AI as a tool to brainstorm.

3. Role Models and Legacy Mapping

Draw Inspiration from Others

Draw inspiration from the lives and achievements of your role models. What extraordinary traits, actions, or habits can you emulate? Then, envision your legacy—how do you want to be remembered by future generations? During the COVID lockdown, I started journaling and have since maintained the habit. Furthermore, I am an avid reader of individual and family biographies, constantly seeking inspiration from the lives of others. This practice fuels my aspirations and provides a treasure trove of lessons and strategies I can apply to my own journey.

What You Need: Journals, books and digital templates to document your findings.

4. Life Wheel Assessment

Find Your Balance

Draw a wheel divided into Career, Health, Relationships, and Growth segments. Rate your satisfaction in each area, then identify goals to improve balance and fulfillment. In 1998, my husband and I embarked on this exercise during a transformative seminar. As a stay-at-home mom, I envisioned a future teeming with possibilities in every segment. My husband's focus was singular—work. It wasn’t until 2012, when his board inspired him to explore other areas of interest, that he embraced a more balanced life. This powerful exercise opened our eyes to the importance of nurturing every facet of our existence, paving the way for a journey of continuous self-discovery and growth.

Tools: Printable templates or simply sketch your own wheel.

5. Goal Laddering

Break Down Big Goals

Visualize your journey by creating a ladder where the top represents your ultimate goal, and each rung signifies a milestone. This helps transform daunting ambitions into manageable steps. This works well for performance goals, things you have accomplished before which doesn’t require additional learning. This was always my go to solution. Run a marathon, sure, I had a training plan, diet plan, and coach to help me achieve my goals. Learning goals need a BRIDGE to accomplishing those goals.

6. Backward Planning

Start with the End in Mind

Imagine your goal as if it’s already achieved, then work backward to identify the steps needed to get there. This method has been our trusted approach for years. Instead of looking too far ahead, we sometimes focus on a three to five-year horizon, making it less daunting. Envision your ultimate success vividly, and then meticulously outline each stage of your journey, ensuring that every step is clear and attainable. This method allows you to paint your masterpiece with precision and confidence.

Prompt: “In 10 years, I want to be ____. What must I do this year to move closer?”

7. Accountability Partner System

Stay Consistent

Team up with someone who shares your commitment to personal growth. Regular check-ins foster mutual support and accountability, making it easier to achieve your goals together. At each family meeting, we review our goals, which allows us to gather input from other family members in a safe environment. This also provides support on how they can contribute to our efforts.

Pro Tip: Use apps, shared journals, or family support to track progress together.

8. "If Money Were No Object" Dream Session

Dream Without Limits

Imagine living your dream life without any financial constraints or resource limitations. What would that look like? Identify parts of that dream you can start working on now and set them as goals. Reflecting on our own journey with the farm, we had no idea how we would manage the renovations after the purchase. Yet, by keeping our focus and determination, we succeeded in realizing the first part of our ten-year vision. We still have grand plans for the future, but that initial accomplishment has fueled our confidence and excitement for what's to come.

Pro Tip: Once you identify the dream, brainstorm what investment is needed and how you can achieve it.

9. Time Capsule of Goals

Reflect on Your Growth

Write down your major goals and place them in a "time capsule," such as a sealed envelope or a digital file. Revisit this capsule in ten years or more to measure your progress. Although we haven't tried this technique yet, we do have our initial goals from ten years ago, so we can start by reviewing those. We will consider creating one leading up to 2035.

10. Family or Team Goal Jar

Foster Collective Goal-Setting

Write down personal or group goals, place them in a jar, and select one each month to discuss progress or brainstorm solutions. This one we are just beginning to work on. We want to reinvasion the farm. What will it look like when the grandchildren are running it? What skills do they need now to accomplish it in the future?

11. Bucket List Creation

Dream Big and Bold

Create a list of 100 things you want to achieve, see, or experience in your lifetime. This exercise helps you identify and prioritize meaningful aspirations. Before we developed our official goal-setting process, we practiced this exercise as a family. Initially, our sons were hesitant and worried that we wouldn’t approve of their goals. One son expressed his concern by asking, “What if I just want to be a bum?” But our other son quickly responded, “Then we will help you be the best bum you can be.” That was a profound perspective.

What You Need: Journals or spreadsheets.

12. Obstacle Mapping

Prepare for Challenges

For each major goal, it's important to brainstorm potential obstacles and develop a plan to overcome them. Proactively addressing challenges helps build resilience. We recently started incorporating this approach into our process after reading Caroline Adams Miller’s book, *Big Goals*. She encourages us to anticipate events that could derail our goals. For example, when we launched our Wagyu business, we initially focused on selling exclusively to restaurants. However, that was in 2020, right when the pandemic hit and restaurants closed. As a result, we pivoted and launched an online store, which has been very successful.

Tools: Use charts or sticky notes for visualization.

13. Annual Goal Retreat

Reflect and Plan in a Relaxing Setting

Dedicate a full day or an entire weekend to reflect on your past achievements and set clear, impactful goals for the future. Whether you choose to do this solo or with a group, this immersive activity can bring clarity and renewed inspiration. Taking advantage of our farm, we create an environment that fosters deep reflection and visionary thinking. The tranquil surroundings of nature, with its soothing sounds and serene landscape, provide the perfect setting for clear and focused contemplation.

Pro Tip: Choose a serene location for deeper focus.

14. Celebration Map

Motivate with Rewards

For every milestone you achieve, plan a reward to celebrate your progress. This will reinforce your commitment and keep you motivated. In our family, we created a special flag to mark significant milestones. For example, our middle son took the flag with him when he climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. He had everyone who reached the summit sign it, recognizing each person's achievement.

Example: After reaching a significant milestone, treat yourself to a weekend getaway or a fancy dinner, or, as we did, create a flag.

Conclusion

Great ambitions don’t have to feel daunting. Engaging in these imaginative and well-structured activities can turn your grandest dreams into attainable milestones. So grab your journal, gather your tools, and start crafting your pathway to success. The brilliant future you’ve dreamed of is just a thoughtful plan away!
