Annie Laura Hoge

Annie Hoge was the eldest child born in Roanoke to a prominent lawyer, Beverly Lacy Hoge, and his wife, Marie Antoinette Hatcher. At about age 9, the family moved from Roanoke to North Carolina when her dad decided to leave his law practice to become a Baptist minister. She noted the stark change in lifestyle from a wealthy family to a modest minister’s family.

When she became engaged to Dr. George Vick, they had a beautiful engagement party at Wheatland in Giles County. The actual wedding took place at their home at 31 Church Street in Charleston, SC, with beautiful chrysanthemums adorning the property.

Annie was a bright student in oratory and music and the winner of the scholarship offered by Cox College. She was the founder and president of the Selma Women’s Club, a member of Selma Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 40 years. She outlived her husband by almost 50 years, passing away at age 99.
